Data Protection Acts 1988 -2018 (as amended) and the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR)

Background

The purpose of this notification is to set out some information regarding the collection and processing of your information by the Peace Campus which is managed by Monaghan County Council.  During the course of our activities, we will collect, store and process data about our Peace Campus Newsletter subscribers. Monaghan County Council is the data controller in respect of this data.

Monaghan County Council creates, collects and processes a significant amount of ‘personal data’ and ‘sensitive personal data’ in various multiple formats daily. Our commitment is to ensure that the personal data supplied is:

  • Obtained lawfully, fairly and in a transparent manner
  • Collected for only specified, explicit and legitimate purposes,
  • Adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary for the purpose for which it was obtained,
  • Recorded, stored accurately and where necessary kept up to date,
  • Kept for no longer that is necessary, and, in a form, which permits identification of the data subject,
  • Processed in a manner that ensures the appropriate security of the personal data including protection against unauthorised or unlawful processing of the data.

What data we collect and process

The types of personal data that may be collected and processed includes:
Name of subscriber, contact email address, name of organisation or company, telephone and/or mobile contact details. 

Why do we collect this personal data?

We collect and process this information in order to distribute the bi-monthly Peace Campus Newsletter to subscribers who wish to be informed about Peace Campus activities and news.

Lawfulness of Processing

GDPR requires consent before sending marketing communications. Under (GDPR) Article 4, consent is only valid if it’s a: freely given, specific, informed, and unambiguous indication of the data subject’s wishes by which he or she, by a statement or by a clear affirmative action, signifies agreement to the processing of personal data relating to him or her”; Article 7 (GDPR): Conditions for Consent where Consent must be:

  • Given freely
  • Express, and
  • Be easy to withdraw at any time
  • Individuals must not feel pressured or coerced into giving consent.
  • Make purposes clear so that individuals know what they’re consenting to.
  • Participant should take a positive, affirmative step to give consent e.g. clicking a checkbox next to a statement that says ‘I Agree’

It should also be clear how people can revoke consent or change their communication preferences.

Sharing of Personal Data

Monaghan County Council may, from time to time, have to share personal data with other local authorities, organisations or entities in Ireland who assist us in fulfilling our functions. Where this is necessary Monaghan County Council shall have regard to the security and integrity of the data and will minimise the data shared.

The data obtained and processed for the Peace Campus Newsletter will not be shared with other local authorities, third parties or entities.

Retention of Personal Data

The data obtained and processed as part of this activity will be retained for the following period:

Until subscribers unsubscribe from the Newsletter.  All data held will be deleted immediately when the subscriber has cancelled their subscription. 

Your Rights

You have the right to request access to personal data held about you, obtain confirmation as to whether data concerning you exists, be informed of the content and source of data and check its accuracy.
